Iowa Gun Crime Penalties

Iowa firearm offenses are set out in Iowa Code chapter 724. Common charges include:

• Carrying a firearm on school grounds: A Class D felony.
• Reckless use of a firearm: A Class C felony if serious injury results, and a Class D felony for bodily injury.

• Carrying while intoxicated: A serious misdemeanor.
• Weapon-free zones: Any firearm offense within 1,000 feet of a school or public park carries double the maximum fine.

Permitless Carry in Iowa

Since July 1, 2021, a person not otherwise prohibited from possessing a firearm may carry openly or concealed without a permit. Permits remain available and are useful for reciprocity elsewhere. Additionally, the carry age has lowered from 21 to 18 as of July 1, 2025.
